The Dallas Museum of Art is a strong choice for a broad collection and free general admission, while the Nasher pairs galleries with a sculpture garden and the Crow focuses on Asian art. All three are in the Arts District, so you can compare them by collection, admission and the days they open.

For a free visit, consider the DMA or Crow Museum. The DMA requires a ticket for every visitor, including children, even though general admission costs nothing. Crow admission is always free. At the Nasher, adult admission is $10, with reduced or free entry for eligible groups.

The DMA’s collection covers art from the third millennium BCE to the present, with works from the Americas, Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Europe and the ancient Mediterranean. The Nasher offers a different mix: its admission covers interior galleries, the sculpture garden and special exhibitions. The Crow’s Dallas Arts District location focuses on Asian art.

If you are building a wider day around downtown, the Arts District can fit into a one-day Dallas route from Dealey Plaza. Check museum hours before settling on the order of your stops.

Dallas Museum of Art

The Dallas Museum of Art (DMA) combines a wide-ranging collection with free general admission at 1717 North Harwood Street, Dallas, TX 75201. Its collection spans millennia and regions, from the ancient Mediterranean to art from the Americas, Africa, Asia, the Pacific and Europe.

The DMA is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., and closed Monday and Tuesday. It also closes on Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. General admission is free, but every visitor—including children—needs a ticket.

Reserve tickets online or get them at the Guest Services Desk. Members can reserve free tickets, and all exhibitions are free for members; when a special exhibition requires a reservation, visitors need both general-admission and exhibition reservations.

Public spaces throughout the museum are wheelchair accessible. A limited number of wheelchairs are available at the Guest Services Desk. Personal-use photography and filming are allowed without flash.

Tripods, selfie sticks, monopods and camera equipment larger than a handheld camera with a single one-inch lens are not allowed. Food and drinks are prohibited in the galleries, including children’s snack cups and baby bottles.

For a first visit, make your ticket arrangements before arriving, then allow time for the collection rather than treating the DMA as a quick stop. The museum’s hours, tickets and first-visit details can help you plan around its admission requirements.

Admission
the Nasher charges most visitors, while the Crow is free

The Nasher Sculpture Center and Crow Museum of Asian Art sit on Flora Street, but differ in both focus and admission: the Nasher charges most visitors, while the Crow is free. The Nasher is at 2001 Flora Street, and the Crow’s Dallas Arts District location is at 2010 Flora Street.

Nasher Sculpture Center

The Nasher is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., and closed Monday and Tuesday. It also closes on Independence Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.

Admission is $10 for adults, $7 for visitors age 65 and over, and $5 for students and educators with ID. Children under 12, military members and first responders with ID, SNAP EBT card holders and members enter free. DART riders pay $8 with valid proof of ticket.

Admission includes the interior galleries, sculpture garden and special exhibitions. The center recommends reserving and downloading a ticket in advance to ensure admission. Metered street parking is available on Harwood, Olive, Ross and along the Woodall Rodgers service road. The Nasher offers accessibility resources; contact its Visitor Experiences staff with questions or to reserve assistive resources in advance.

Crow Museum of Asian Art

The Crow Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 11 a.m.–5 p.m., and closed Mondays, major holidays and occasional additional dates for special events or inclement weather. Admission is always free, and the museum describes its Dallas Arts District location as open six days a week year-round.

Crow members can park for up to two hours free in the Trammell Crow Center Parking Garage by bringing their parking ticket to the museum front desk for validation. For nonmembers, the garage charges $5 per hour with a $25 maximum on weekdays, $10 after 5 p.m., and a $10 daily maximum on Saturdays and Sundays.

Planning an Arts District visit

Planning an Arts District visit

Plan around each museum’s opening days, and check current hours and admission details before you set out. The DMA and Nasher share a Wednesday-through-Sunday pattern, while the Crow also opens on Tuesdays.

That makes Tuesday a day to consider the Crow rather than planning around the other two. For local transport planning, you can compare how to get around Dallas by DART and bus.

If you want to visit more than one museum, check each admission and ticket requirement first. You need a DMA ticket even for free general admission, while the Nasher recommends advance reservations. The Crow does not charge admission. DART riders also qualify for the Nasher’s $8 admission with valid proof of ticket.

From Welcome Inn, Dallas city centre is about 9 minutes by car, and the motel offers one-star rooms. Before you go: museum hours, admission policies and parking terms can change, so check the official site before you go.
